The poor, gentle vegetable lamb, which lived in the land of the Tartars near the Caspian Sea, was highly valued for its warm wool. These vegetable lambs, known as barometz, popped from gourds on certain trees. The barometz would remain attached to the tree it came from by an umbilical cord. It would eat the grasses it could reach, but, when all the grass was eaten, it would slowly starve to death.
