The peryton, which lived near the Straits of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean, was a deer-like animal with wings. Itwas said to be a man-eater that would swoop sown on unsuspecting sailors and devour them. It was also said that no weapon could avail against their strength. Many people believed that it was related to the Pegasus of Greece, but the peryton had one unique characteristic. It had the shadow of a man. Because of this, many thought that perytons were the spirits of wayfarers who had died far from home.
