The catoblepas in Ethiopia was a scaly animal with the body of a buffalo and the face of a boar. It was said that the animal would gnaw on it's own fore legs because of its voracious hunger. The animal's head would nod all the time. Hence its name which is Greek means "that which looks downward". This circumstance was very fortunate because the glance of the catoblepas would kill jusst like that of the bailisk.
